October 14, 2024 – Ottawa, Canada – Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada announced today that six Indian diplomats and consular officials have received notices of expulsion from Canada in connection with a targeted campaign against Canadian citizens by agents linked to the Government of India.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have collected information linking the investigation to Indian government agents. In order to advance the investigation and allow the RCMP to interview those involved, India has been requested to waive diplomatic and consular immunities and cooperate with the investigation. Unfortunately, given India’s refusal and current public safety concerns for Canadians, Canada has issued deportation notices to these individuals. Following these notices, India announced that it would withdraw its civil servants from the country.

Canada and India have enjoyed diplomatic relations for over 75 years. Our countries share important historical, commercial and people-to-people ties. Canada made this decision because its main interest remains the security of all Canadians, the defense of our sovereignty and respect for the rule of law. Canada will continue to work diligently to do everything in its power to keep Canadians safe, now and in the future. Dialogue with India continues through our High Commission in Delhi.
