The State of Friborg wants to create 14 new tranquility zones and expand the already existing La Berra zone to minimize human impact on wildlife. Supporting measures will be put in place to inform the public.

Among the support measures of the Friborg State are, for example, maps and information panels around the new zones. These elements will allow the population to know “where they can travel, during what period and on what path”, explains Didier Castella, Friborg state councilor and director of institutions, agriculture and forests.

Friborg lagging behind compared to Valais

Compared to other French-speaking cantons, Friborg is lagging behind in this area. The canton of Valais, for example, has nearly 150 tranquility zones.

For Dominique Schaller, head of the Friborg Forest and Nature Service, the other cantons have been more proactive on the matter. “We have quite a few hunting areas, but we are going to partially replace them with quiet areas,” he adds.

The new tranquility zones should come into existence on July 1, 2025.
