Watch the video above and let us know if you recognize it. Yes, that’s it: the new electric 4L. Now we say “R4”. Inside, of course, it no longer has anything to do with the famous 4L of the 60s. But its exterior look, a bit outdated, already brings back good memories for participants of the 2024 Paris Motor Show. Round headlights, taillights, sloping trunk, canvas roof: this “R4” takes the shapes and some details of the original 4L. And so, in many ways, it still strongly resembles its ancestor, minus the noise of the engine, like that of the handbrake.

Exclusively, our team was able to film in the R4 factory in . A site until now reserved for Renault Kangoos. At the moment, very few R4s are manufactured, one per day. They are mainly intended to be destroyed during the inevitable crash tests. This R4 should be sold for around 30,000 euros. A price that is ultimately competitive compared to competitors who produce in lower cost countries. “We also benefit from a network of suppliers developed within a maximum radius of 300 km in ,” Luis Quinalha, director of the Renault Ampere Electricity factory, explains to TF1. “We also become competitive in France without any problem.”

On sale from this summer

The 4L was once sold in more than 8 million copies. The rebirth of this popular car therefore delights enthusiasts who still drive it. “It’s the all-purpose car, a small family car since it has four seats”notes an amateur in the TF1 report. “We can bring the kids. We can carry packages. We can fold the seats.” And it will always be possible with the news.

High on its wheels, but less “SUV”-style than the first concept presented in 2022 by Renault, this R4 will be marketed from this summer. It will be positioned in the Renault range above the R5, with 40 or 52 kWh batteries, which promise ranges of 300 and 400 kilometers.
