Northumberland Ferries, the company that operates crossings between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, confirmed Monday that one of the two ferries, the NM Saaremaa, will not be returned to service by the end of the season.

The ship had already been stationary since September 22, due to a failure of one of its engines.

The CEO of Northumberland Ferries, Jeff Joycesaid in a statement Monday that other mechanical problems of the NM Saaremaa were detected.

This ship was borrowed for three seasons from the Société des traversiers du Québec to replace the NM Holiday Islandimmobilized due to fire.

Once the repairs are completed, the NM Saaremaa will be prepared for its return trip to Quebec, most likely at the end of October.

Earlier this month, Northumberland Ferries had announced that the NM Saaremaa would remain at the dock at least until October 19.

He was initially expected to return to service for the remainder of the season.

Possible early return of the NM Confederation

At the same time, the second ferry making the same route, the NM Confederation, has been out of service since a collision with a dock due to a mechanical failure on September 15.

The resumption of its crossings has been set for December 9.

Northumberland Ferries however, declared Monday that the date could be brought forward, since the repair work at the Pictou shipyard is progressing well.

The navigation season between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island normally ends at the end of December.
