During the Valais municipal elections this Sunday, the UDC entered the executives of two additional cities. At the cantonal level, the PLR is losing ground and the Center is regaining ground.

Sion maintains its composition with 3 PLR, 3 Center, 1 UDC and 1 Vert. Stability also in Brig (3 Center, 2 UDC, 1 PLR, 1 PS) and Visp (6 Center, 1 PLR, 1 PS, 1 UDC).

In Sierre, the UDC entered the executive to the detriment of the PLR (1) which lost another seat in favor of the Center (4). The PS (2) and the Vert-es (1) keep theirs.

In Martigny, the UDC steals a seat in the Center (2). In this liberal-radical bastion, the PLR retains its 5 seats, the PS keeps its.

In Monthey, the PLR won a seat to the detriment of the Center. The city therefore finds itself with 4 PLR, 2 PS, 1 Center and two elected officials from the Monthey Demain list on which the outgoing UDC stood. Note that Monthey Demain defines itself as a movement “without political label or affiliation”.

Valais elections: the results are already known in 27 municipalities / Forum / 2 min. / today at 6:00 p.m.

“Goal achieved”

Across the entire canton, the UDC is progressing, particularly in French-speaking Valais (+7). He enters the cities, “our historical objective” and adds that he has also “strengthened his local roots”.

For its part, the Center of French-speaking Valais is “very satisfied” with its gain of 7 seats. “We are winning in municipalities where we did not expect it, such as Sierre, Crans-Montana or even Nendaz,” explains Vincent Baud, general secretary of the party. The Center (formerly PDC) was counting on its new name to regain momentum.

Retreat of the PLR and the left

The PLR declines by 15 seats in French-speaking Valais. However, it remains well established in the towns of Martigny and Sion. He also managed to win a seat in Monthey.

“We are rather satisfied, because we are gaining seats where we wanted,” notes its president Vincent Pravato. At the city level, the black spot is in Sierre, where the PLR lost a seat. “We will analyze the reasons for this loss,” he says.

On the left, we deplore the loss of four seats. In Nendaz, that of Sarah Constantin, group leader at the Grand Council, was “a big surprise”, indicates the president of the PS of French-speaking Valais Clément Borgeaud.

The Greens hold on

The Greens, who were a hit in 2020, are holding their ground (-1). The co-president of the formation Philippe Cina says he is “happy” to have retained “roughly speaking” the number of seats won 4 years ago, even if “a more detailed analysis will undoubtedly reveal a decline in the percentage of voice”.

He also says he is “rather worried” to see the gain of the conservative forces, the Center and the UDC. “The geopolitical climate even influences municipal elections,” he notes. Finally, the Vert’libéral party, the latest arrival on the Valais political scene, retained its two seats.

During this Sunday’s counting, various observers highlighted the difficulty of attributing to one or the other party the seats won within the citizen or municipal agreement lists. The choice was made here to only talk about parties and candidates who are clearly affiliated with them.
