This Saturday, a new astronomical observatory was inaugurated in Barcelonnette by Sophie Vaginay Ricourt, MP for Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The infrastructure, born from a collective project initiated several years ago, has been hailed as a symbol of commitment to education, science and the preservation of nature. The MP expressed her pride in having carried this project as mayor, before inaugurating it today as a parliamentarian. She wanted to thank Pierre-Martin Charpenel, former mayor behind the arrival of Father Josset’s telescope, as well as the partners of the Mercantour National Park, the State and the city’s technical teams, including the Combined efforts made this initiative possible. Located in the heart of the International Starry Sky Reserve, this observatory offers an ideal setting for astronomical observation, in one of the purest skies in . Beyond its scientific role, the observatory is also an educational space intended to awaken the curiosity of young people and to encourage vocations in the field of astronomy. “It is a place of sharing and wonder for all,” underlined Sophie Vaginay Ricourt, emphasizing the importance of making science accessible to all. The observatory is thus preparing to become a new meeting point for researchers, students and astronomy enthusiasts, strengthening Barcelonnette’s influence in the scientific field.
