Even if all the calls for caution were made, there would still be people who wouldn’t be afraid to rent Airbnb rooms. I trust traditional hoteliers. These hotels have people who are stationed on site and who have received the necessary training to manage a hotel establishment. These establishments have been inspected and have all the necessary authorizations. In addition, they do not subtract housing from the rental stock intended for traditional rental. Question of solidarity, why would I rent a room in an Airbnb? I am lucky to have a place to call my own. I don’t see myself participating in an operation to throw people onto the street. Neither here nor elsewhere.

The care we each take for our security is not just the responsibility of governments, at first glance. Governments also have their responsibilities to protect our health and safety and they fulfill them in varying ways, let us put it in polite terms. When people decide to stay in an Airbnb, they are making a decision that can affect their safety. I hope that the negative publicity given to the last two incidents will have an impact on Airbnb traffic.

The deaths that occur in Airbnbs are sad for the people, their families and those around them, because they were loved ones with a future. We are therefore forced to recognize our powerlessness to protect all the people on our territory.

After seeing our powerlessness to manage private companies incapable of ensuring the safety of their customers, there remains a decision to make. Even with an army of civil servants that we pay well, it is impossible to monitor all the activities of money-hungry companies with little inclination to respect the law.

The government could assign civil servants to other essential tasks in our society. Especially since these officials are paid with our tax money and they only police companies that internalize profits and externalize costs.

It remains for the government to have the courage to ban all rentals in Airbnbs.
