OM: The consolation prize after the elimination in the Europa League

Despite the immense disappointment following the elimination of Olympique Marseille this Thursday evening, the club had a remarkable campaign during the 2023-24 Europa League season. These good performances on the European scene will also help to boost the club’s finances thanks to the rewards distributed by UEFA. This could compensate for their elimination against Panathinaïkós during the play-offs for qualification for the Champions League, a significant loss both on a sporting and financial level, as President Pablo Longoria underlined last December. The financial consequences of this elimination were significant, particularly in terms of shortfall in ticketing revenue and merchandising linked to the Champions League. In addition, the gains granted by UEFA are significantly greater for the teams participating in the C1, thus leaving OM without a considerable amount.

The reward for a great Europa League campaign

However, despite this disappointment, the Marseillais, transferred to the Europa League, still managed to accumulate income. They benefited from a participation bonus of €3.63 million, to which are added revenues based on their coefficient (€3.3 million) and the marketpool (around €2.4 million). In addition, their results during the group stage allowed them to generate additional bonuses, thus totaling an amount of €18.49 million until their elimination in the semi-final.

Although the opportunity for a final could have represented substantial additional gains, OM will now have to focus on obtaining European qualification in Ligue 1 for the following season in the coming days, which seems essential for the good economic and sporting health of the Olympian club.
