Pope Francis named 21 new cardinals on Sunday, including Toronto Archbishop Francis Leo. He is the only archbishop in North America to have been chosen at the conclave.

Archbishop Leo was born in Montreal and served as vicar general and moderator of the curia of the archdiocese of the Quebec metropolis, where he was also auxiliary bishop.

He studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome from 2006 to 2008 before joining the diplomatic service of the Holy See.

He has been the Archbishop of Toronto since March 25, 2023.

In a statement, Archbishop Leo said he was both humbled and honored to have been named a cardinal and that he will continue to serve the faithful of Toronto.

The 53-year-old prelate will be officially sworn in on December 8, when he will receive his scarlet cassock and galero.
