A driver ends his race against a daycare in Quebec

A man who was driving while impaired by alcohol ended his race in front of a daycare on Chauveau Avenue, in Quebec, possibly preventing the children from returning at the start of the week.

Police officers from the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ) were called to the scene, at the intersection of avenue du Patrimoine-Mondial, around 12:15 a.m. Sunday morning for a hit-and-run.

Following a short search in the area, the suspect was found.

He was arrested for impaired driving, confirms the SPVQ.

Images captured on site show a vehicle having lightly hit the facade of the building, notably damaging a pillar in front of the front door.

Met on site Sunday morning, the owner of the Le Monde enchanté daycare, Audrey Fortin, explains that she is awaiting an assessment from a contractor to determine if the building is still safe to accommodate children on Monday morning.

Behind the exterior facade hit by the car, a children’s room had its wall damaged by the impact.

“We have to see if the structure has been damaged,” according to Mme Fort. “We’ll see what happens next.”

The parents of the children in the unsubsidized private daycare with around sixty places have been notified. Mme Fortin said she was relieved that the accident happened in the middle of the night and not on a weekday.

No people were injured during this incident.

“When we think about what happened in last year, no one wants that,” she says, referring to the bus driver who hit a daycare, killing two children in February 2023.
