Switzerland currently has 65,000 beneficiaries of S status. This status makes it possible to quickly offer protection and reception to refugees from Ukraine. At the end of April, the activity rate of these people stood at 24%. The Federal Council announced that it had taken measures to increase this rate to 40%, then 45% in 2025. The objective of this status remains a rapid return to the beneficiary’s country of origin. The Federal Council, however, emphasizes that having a greater number of people in employment would make it possible to reduce the costs of social assistance.

The government first announced reinforced collaboration between the federal and cantonal services responsible for integration. The aim is for refugees to register more widely in the Regional Placement Offices (ORP). “Since the beginning of this year, the authorities responsible for social assistance have been required to notify the public employment services of S status beneficiaries able to enter the labor market. The Federal Council has instructed the Federal Department of Justice and Police to examine the possibility of including this obligation in law,” says the press release.
