Senegal is part of a dynamic of developing a sustainable and environmentally friendly economy. In this sense, a meeting (the first) as part of the process of developing a green taxonomy in Senegal was held on Monday May 6, 2024 in Dakar.

Coming to represent the ministry in charge of finance and budget, the technical advisor to the general director of the financial sector maintained that the “green taxonomy constitutes the keystone or the cornerstone of green finance” which he “wishes to see develop in Senegal in order to redirect financial flows towards sustainable activities.

Leyti Réné Pierre Ndiaye, in this case, estimated, in the process, that the environmental issue has become transversal both politically and financially and, not only, because of climate change.

“You will agree with me that the environment provides vital resources to each of us and it is observed that almost half of the world’s jobs depend on it,” he stressed.

According to him, this constitutes a crucial reason to aspire to an economy resilient to the effects of climate change and more virtuous in the use of natural resources.

Furthermore, Mr. Ndiaye recalled that Senegal has made international commitments through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).

He indicated that the State has also integrated environmental aspects, by establishing a sustainable financing framework document, by developing a first green budget for the current financial year as well as by promoting private green projects and/or public to achieve.

The technical advisor to the general director of the financial sector notably indicated that Senegal has also decided to be a pioneer, in French-speaking Sub-Saharan Africa, in the development of a green taxonomy.

A green taxonomy is a classification of economic activities that are deemed beneficial for the environment on the basis of criteria taking into account the policies defined in this area.
