A fire burned part of the forest in Watermael-Boitsfort this Sunday morning, near the Drève Saint-Hubert, following the explosion of a gas cylinder on an improvised camp.
The explosion and fire caused no injuries. The events occurred around 5:00 a.m. When the firefighters arrived, around 100 square meters of forest had already gone up in flames.
“This was an accidental explosion at a campsite, presumably involving homeless people or homeless people.“, explained Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the fire brigade. “We sent a tanker and laid some 250 meters of fire hose, from a hydrant at the nearby rugby field. We did everything in our power to prevent the fire from spreading, and fortunately the area was already quite damp from the rains of the last few days.”
One of the fire engines got stuck while putting out the fire. He had to be released. Firefighters left a surveillance team on site to prevent the fire from resuming.
