OTTAWA — The deputy minister of Foreign Affairs says heads of mission around the world will be briefed in November on Canada’s expectations for “acceptable diplomatic activity” during the upcoming general election.

David Morrison told a federal inquiry Friday that foreign diplomats will be summoned to Global Affairs Canada headquarters to examine “exactly where the lines are” between legitimate foreign influence and unwanted interference.

He said Canada will be “very clear” with foreign missions in Ottawa and their consulates across the country on what it considers appropriate diplomatic activity.

Mr Morrison said more could also be done to raise awareness among MPs of what it is like to interact with foreign diplomats.

General elections are expected in Canada within the next year.

The latest hearings of the inquiry into foreign interference focus on the practices of key agencies as well as the experiences of diaspora communities.
