99 Tuesday May 7, 101 Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 May 2024. In Seine-Maritime, from high tidal coefficients are expected this week and the maritime prefect calls “for the greatest caution to all users of the sea, and in particular those who fish on foot or who walk on the coast subject to the tide. A few minutes can sometimes be enough to be isolated by the rising tide. »

Recently, in two days, six walkers found themselves trapped by the tide at the Trou à l’homme in Étretat. Rescued by boat and helicopter, fortunately everyone was safe and sound but with high coefficients in addition, and public holidays and walks to come, it is better to remain cautious.

Spring tides have the effect of increasing the tidal range (difference between the height of high water and that of low water), with greater mixing of sea water and a faster rise of water. They therefore make marine currents stronger and the sea more dangerous, creating an increased risk of isolation by the tide,

the maritime prefecture, by press release

As a reminder, in 2023, 344 people found themselves isolated by the tide. And since the start of 2024, “more than twenty operations have been coordinated across the entire seafront for isolation by the tide. » And the maritime prefecture recalled in its press release: “Unfortunately, 6 people lost their lives. »

The recommendations

To avoid these tragedies, some recommendations from a sea rescuer interviewed by 76-, “you need to know the time of low water, the coefficient and from what time it starts to rise. In our sector, the tide, by these coefficients, rises very quickly, the funds are flat and go very far. We feel safe because the sea is far away. An hour and a half after low water, the water level will rise by 50 cm per quarter of an hour. In an hour, you can gain more than a meter. »

At low tide, you have to go back up. “We are more tired than when we go down and heavier too… so we must not take any risks. » The latter also maintains that in addition to his watch, you also need a telephone to warn in the event of difficulty winding up. “Someone on land needs to know where you are so they can start a search if you haven’t returned in time. » If you have a problem, call 196: the emergency number at sea.
