A retired couple lost their lives this Wednesday, October 2, 2024 after being hit by a car at the entrance to La Meignanne, delegated commune of Longuenée-en-Anjou, near Angers (Maine-et-Loire). The two victims, an 81-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman, were walking on the side of the road when they were struck down by a vehicle, around noon, on the Montreuil-Juigné road, indicates The Western Mail.
The car was driven by a resident of the town aged around forty, who was also transporting her eight-year-old child. Neither was injured, according to the Angers public prosecutor, Éric Bouillard. “Alcohol and drug tests came back negative”said the prosecutor. At this stage, the exact circumstances of the accident remain unknown, although initial testimonies indicate that the driver swerved before the impact.
The mayor of Longuenée-en-Anjou, Jean-Pierre Hébé, expressed the strong emotion felt in this small town of 2,200 inhabitants, where the deceased couple was well known. “For us, it’s a great moment of collective emotion”he declared, West France. The driver, in a state of shock, as well as a resident who witnessed the tragedy, were hospitalized.
An investigation was opened and entrusted to the community gendarmerie brigade of Lion-d’Angers to determine the precise circumstances of the tragedy.
