Thanks to this 100% organic process, it is possible to repair your lawn at a third of the price

A Quebec SME allows its customers to repair their lawns at a third of the price while using a 100% organic process. It is the first company in Canada to exploit this niche.

Biotero uses topdressing and organic seeding to give a second life to plots of grassy land that need it. The Quebec-based company also makes complete terrains.

“We do maintenance by restoring organic matter to the soil,” explains president Philippe Goulet. Fertilizer companies like that. The more organic matter there is in the soil, the better their fertilizers diffuse.”

The first instinct of a person whose lawn is in poor condition is to tear it all out and start again from scratch with rolls of sod. This is not the case with Biotero which works with the surface which is already in place.

“Our process costs a third of the price of rolled peat,” adds Goulet. There are many advantages to using seeding and topdressing.

“We have a variety of seeds and that creates biodiversity which allows for better efficiency. We come up with processes to create durable lawns that will not need maintenance.”

The SME is even capable of growing grass in… sand!

“Instead of removing all the sand and adding soil all over the place, we incorporate our compost into the soil by mixing it on site,” emphasizes Goulet.

Jean-Phillipe LeBlanc and Philippe Goulet have complementary skills to manage Biotero.

A vision and expansion

In the management of the company, Goulet is supported by Jean-Philippe LeBlanc, who takes care of the sales side. A story that goes beyond business because they are brothers-in-law.

“We have complementary skills,” says LeBlanc. Phil is a visionary and has been an entrepreneur for a long time.

“I come from an administrative background. We don’t stand on each other’s toes in the various files. We each have our areas of expertise.”

Speaking of vision, Biotero has expanded in recent weeks by opening franchises in Mirabel, Beloeil, Saint-Jérôme, Saguenay and Victoriaville. And it’s not finished.

In 2025, Goulet and LeBlanc would like to have service points throughout Quebec. Then, they would like to attempt a breakthrough in Ontario and the States in 2026.

A decisive regulation

It was thanks to a moratorium on the watersheds of the municipality of Lac-Beauport that the idea of creating Biotero germinated in the mind of Philippe Goulet.

“I owned a landscaping company and because of the moratorium, we could no longer use fertilizers and pesticides,” explains Goulet. I didn’t believe in fertilizers because we always have to reapply them.

“People were asking us what they should do to maintain their lawn. We looked at what was being done in and the United States to try to find solutions.”

several tests, Biotero managers found the right recipe that would allow them to launch their business. And the results are convincing.
