Thiès, Oct 2 (APS) – A regional committee to combat irregular migration (CRLMI) was set up this Tuesday in Thiès, noted the APS correspondent.

Placed under the coordination of the regional governor, the committee was installed by the permanent secretary of the interministerial committee to combat irregular migration (CILMI), Modou Diagne.

”Today, we must face a reality that deeply affects our population, in particular young people and women and now minors,” declared Mr. Diagne during the ceremony.

He considers that irregular migration is a phenomenon of dramatic magnitude, believing that it requires our attention, “our solidarity” and “our collective determination to act together”.

”Behind each candidate for irregular migration there is a story, dreams and sacrifices. For years, thousands of young people have been risking their lives to cross borders, sometimes leaving their homes in desperate conditions, risking their safety, even their lives,” he recalled.

Modou Diagne underlined the need to ”respond to the challenges and risks that irregular migration poses to our society”.

According to him, the fight against this phenomenon involves a collective effort requiring the mobilization of all actors in Senegalese society.

”By collaborating, we will be able to create an environment conducive to development and prosperity and dissuade young people from risking their lives on dangerous, and sometimes deadly, journeys,” he said.

He indicates that the measures put in place by the State of Senegal have made it possible to obtain convincing results.

”Indeed, employability and youth employment programs, vocational training and apprenticeship, territorial and social equity policies constitute a real vision of the government to stem the phenomenon of irregular migration with its share of misfortunes,” he insisted.

He explained that this vision was translated at the institutional level by the creation of the Interministerial Committee to Combat Illegal Migration, which this year became the Interministerial Committee to Combat Irregular Migration. It is this committee which developed the national strategy to combat irregular migration.
