Blue tongue disease is progressing in Hérault. The prefect warns breeders.

Currently, 22 outbreaks of animals suffering from bluetongue (blue tongue disease) and four from epizootic haemorrhagic disease have been recorded in Hérault. From now on, 273 municipalities in Hérault are included in the regulated zone due to new outbreaks in Ardèche and Tarn-et-Garonne, which leads to movement restrictions for animals from this zone.

The prefect of Hérault calls on breeders to have their animals screened for suggestive signs such as hyperthermia, mouth ulcers, locomotion difficulties. Screening operations are supported by the State.

No transmission to humans

Important to know: these viruses do not affect humans. The vaccines placed on the market can be used for sheep or cattle and are lastingly effective (annual boosters) to prevent contamination or limit the effects of the disease on animals.

In a press release, the prefect specifies that the State has purchased a stock of vaccines against FCO3 in order to make them available free of charge to breeders. Orders can be placed by veterinarians upon request from breeders. Support measures for breeders affected by diseases are being developed.
