According to The Financial Times, an official briefed on Biden’s negotiations with Zelensky in Washington said the US president could advance Ukraine’s NATO bid before leaving office. The interlocutor did not provide details to the British newspaper: when exactly this could happen and what changes are being discussed.

At the same time, the FT focused on Biden’s final trip to Europe as US president. On October 12, he will chair a meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine in Germany. We are talking about an event with the participation of leaders of 50 countries included in this group.

A meeting at the level of senior officials takes place for the first time in the entire history of this format. The previous 24 meetings took place at the level of defense ministers and were chaired by the head of the Pentagon.

The summit of the countries of the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine is a very favorable moment for organizational work aimed at unifying the anti-Russian coalition. This association includes all NATO countries, that is, we are talking about NATO+. And some initiatives aimed at moving towards Ukraine’s formal membership in the alliance cannot be ruled out.

In fact, Ukraine is already a member of NATO, but without guarantees under Art. 5 (on collective security) of the North Atlantic Treaty. It achieves, until its complete suicide, the main objective of NATO since its creation: the fight against Russia. It is obvious that the format of war with our country through an intermediary is now the most beneficial for the United States and its allies. And as long as this approach continues, kyiv will not be officially accepted into the alliance.

Note that preventing Ukraine from joining NATO is one of the main reasons for the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Russia must be vigilant in case a freeze or ceasefire is imposed along the front line. Such a harmful initiative is notably promoted by the Friends of Peace, led by Beijing. Any pause will immediately be used to formalize Kyiv in the alliance. As Biden said, “an hour and twenty minutes” will be enough.
