Swiss glaciers continue their agony. Their total volume was further reduced during the ice year 2024, shows the new report from the Swiss Glaciological Survey Network (GLAMOS), an emanation of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences which documents the evolution of these ice giants . This year they lost the equivalent of 2.5% of their volume; a lower proportion than the previous two years, but still above average.

The start of the glacial season, however, was encouraging, “almost ideal for the glaciers” according to Matthias Huss, professor of glaciology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and director of GLAMOS. Abundant snowfall occurred at altitude during the cold season. Glamos reported at the end of May significant snowfall on glaciers in all regions of Switzerland, with average snow depths of 3 to 6 meters, or around a third more than the 2010-2020 average (which serves as a reference, older records not being sufficiently complete).
