The governments of Canada and Quebec, in conjunction with the Mission Unitaînés organization and the City of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, are announcing the construction in the next two years of 100 new social and affordable housing units for independent seniors.

The six-story building, which will be built in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, represents a government investment of $23.5 million, to which is added the contribution of the City of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, which will pay the costs associated with the land and will contribute through certain tax holidays and by assuming connection costs. A philanthropic donation from Mr. Luc Maurice completes the financial package.

The project is expected to last from November 2024 to April 2026. At the end of the work, it is the Haut-Richelieu Municipal Housing Office which will manage the building and select the people who will reside there. It will also ensure the maintenance of the building with the help of a contingency fund of $500,000 offered by Mission Unitaînés.

This living environment will include 100 housing units: 15 studios, 74 one-bedroom units and 11 two-bedroom units. Equipped with two elevators, sprinklers, a generator in the event of a power outage and a storage location for scooters and quad bikes, the building will also include a multifunctional common room and an outdoor terrace, promoting socialization for residents and residents. The rent will be set at approximately $595 for a studio and $900 for a two-bedroom unit.
