From 2019 to 2022, 309 people were victims of carjacking in the streets of Montreal, reveals a study by the health department, published Wednesday, providing a first portrait of this phenomenon in the metropolis.
Carrying consists of opening the vehicle door without precaution, hitting a pedestrian, a wheelchair, but also, most often, a cyclist.
According to this study, 70% of cases took place on streets without cycle facilities and 30% occurred on cycle paths.
We also learn that no crashes have been recorded on protected cycle lanes. Central neighborhoods with on-street parking are most at risk
.
François Tessier, researcher and co-author of the study, specifies, however, that the figures on which he relied are based only on data recorded by the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).

The report by Jacaudrey Charbonneau.
In interview at 15-18he says he believes that the data collected could be much lower than the actual portrait, because not all thefts are systematically reported to the police.
The researcher recalls that, during the period of collection of this data, we experienced the pandemic, which could change the true portrait
of the situation.
Summer is upon us, the cycling season is underway and there are more and more people traveling by bicycle. Study authors recommend that more be done for safe cycling infrastructure in order to ensure a change in behavior in our travels
