flame in : where to stand to watch the arrival of Belem?

A big party from 11 a.m. until the highly anticipated moment of the landing of the flame on the Old Port: this , May 8 promises to be festive in .

Before arriving on dry land, a maritime parade will take place until 5 p.m. with more than 1,000 boats to accompany the legendary three-masted ship Belem. It will deploy parallel to the coast, towards the South, passing in front of Joliette, Anse des Catalans, Vallon des Auffes and Anse de la Fausse Monnaie, before greeting pedestrians along the Corniche up to the Pointe . The ships will then go to the port of l’Escalette, before heading out to sea then to the southern tip of Frioul before finally heading towards the Old Port.

At 7 p.m., the Belem will dock there using an exceptional device. Finally, the Olympic torch will be unloaded. The lighting of the Olympic cauldron is scheduled for 7:40 p.m., which will mark the official start of the relay.

To make the most of this spectacle, there are several places to choose. Provence recommends 5 “spots”.

Good plan 1: the landscaped viewpoints

If you wish to observe the maritime parade of the 1,024 ships which will sail around the flame, several viewpoints have been set up around the harbor. From north to south, along the coastline, you will be able to sit comfortably to observe this event.

To best appreciate this spectacle, 5 sea views are available to spectators:

  • Mistral space at Estaque
  • Pharo Garden
  • Gate of the East
  • Corniche island
  • Algerian Returnees Memorial

Among them, the best spot to have a beautiful view of the arrival of the Belem in the Old Port of Marseille is that of the Jardin du Pharo which offers a beautiful panorama of the entry into the port. And, even if you are placed a little too far away, broadcast screens will be installed there so you don’t miss anything of the show.

Good plan 2: the shade house of the Old Port

To see the arrival of the flame up close, nothing better than to stand all along the Old Port, where the legendary three-masted ship will be moored. However, it will be necessary to take into account the numerous restrictions which are put in place from Wednesday May 8 at 7 a.m. and until Thursday May 9 at 2 a.m.

You will then have to manage to find a place as close as possible to the water’s edge among the thousands of expected spectators to enjoy the best possible panorama. Once you are well placed, all you have to do is wait for the Belem to arrive to observe its mooring and the disembarkation of the Olympic flame.

Good plan 3: Esplanade de la Tourette

If you want to avoid spending time under the shade of the Old Port but want to enjoy a beautiful, clear view of the arrival of the oldest active French sailboat, head to the 2nd arrondissement. More precisely: the Tourette esplanade. On this long path, you will find the statue “Le tamer d’oursons” by Louis Botinelly opposite the Saint-Laurent church.

The best viewpoint is all around this sculpture, along the barriers. Be careful, however, for people sensitive to heights not to go too close to the edge.

From here, you will have a clear panorama for the arrival of the Belem in the Old Port and you will even be able to see the flame on board being unloaded.

Good plan 4: in front of Saint-Victor Abbey

It’s a viewpoint that risks being crowded, especially with the cafes, bars and restaurants all around. But if you are not agoraphobic, do not hesitate to head towards Saint-Victor Abbey and its surroundings, notably Bertie Albrecht Square.

climbing Rue Sainte, you can watch the arrival of the Olympic flame aboard the Belem while being a little higher up. The place is known for offering of the most beautiful sunsets in Marseille. With the additional Olympic flame, the spectacle should be guaranteed.

Good tip 5: Notre-Dame de la Garde

One of the best “spots” on the Old Port is worth it since you will have to climb up to Notre-Dame de la Garde with a panorama renowned as one of the most complete in the city. From its height of 150 meters, the “Bonne Mère” overlooks the city and offers a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean. And so, on the arrival of the Olympic flame.

Since the viewpoint is very famous, don’t hesitate to get there early to secure a place that will allow you to make the most of this great moment for Marseille.
