At the beginning of September 2024, the Breton-language teaching network Diwan mentioned its alarming financial situation: it needs €500,000 to balance its 2024 financial year.

This Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in a press release, the department of Finistère announced “subscribe to the network’s fundraising of €50,000” and assures to have done of “The defense of the Breton language is a priority, so that its transmission is ensured and it remains a living language. This support is reflected in an annual budget, outside of its mandatory skills, of three million euros.”

Call to other communities

Maël de Calan, president of the department, specifies that this subscription is made despite the very strong financial constraints weighing on our community, and the fact that we are already the leading contributing Department, in terms of the number of speakers”.

He calculates: “If each department commits the same amount, and the region follows the d departments for €250,000, the €500,000 sought by Diwan will be raised.
