On the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2024, several guided tours of the Pirou fortified castle in Manche are offered.

The opportunity to discover history, legend and treasures of the superb building, surrounded by three moats and five fortified gates.

Beautiful view from the patrol path

Built on a vast flat expanse a stone’s throw from the sea, Pirou Castle, seen from the sky, looks like a stone nave, surrounded by large moats filled with water.

The visit to this small fortified castle, whose stone construction dates from the 12e century will take you to the patrol path from where you can admire the century-old plane trees that surround it.

A superb tapestry to discover

From the square tower, the view of the honey farms, the sea and the surrounding fields is superb.

Not to be missed during your visit: the chapel and the room of pleas, where justice was administered. The latter houses a superb tapestry, a true counterpart to the more famous one in Bayeux.

This wool embroidery on linen canvas tells the story the conquest of southern Italy and Sicily by the Normans. It was made by Thérèse Ozenne from Manche, who spent 16 years on this 58-metre tapestry, from 1976 to 1992, at a rate of three hours a day.

Guided tours of the Château de Pirou, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September 2024, at 11 a.m., 2:15 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. (duration: 45 minutes). Prices: €3, free for under 18s. Self-guided tours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., both days, same price. More information on the château website.
