Want to discover one of the great figures of Japanese avant-garde? Head to the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris from Tuesday, April 15 to Sunday, September 7, 2025 to admire the exhibition dedicated to the Japanese multidisciplinary artist Tarō Okamoto.

He is considered by many to be one of the leading figures of Japanese avant-gardism. He was a Japanese painter, sculptor, muralist, photographer, writer and researcher. He is Taro Okamotoand the Quai Branly Museum in Paris is dedicating a major exhibition to him in 2025.

To see from Tuesday April 15 to Sunday September 7, 2025the exhibition ” Tarō Okamoto. A Reinvented Japan » invites us to discover the life, career and works of this multidisciplinary artist born in 1911 and who died in 1996 at the age of 84.

Little known in France, it is nevertheless in France that Taro Okamoto built part of his career. After arriving in Paris in 1929, at the age of 18, Taro Okamoto trained in the ethnology laboratory of the Musée de l’Homme in 1938, with the sociologist and anthropologist Marcel Mauss and the doctor and ethnologist Paul Rivet.

He finally decided to leave France to return home to Japan in 1940. A decade would then be enough for him to become one of the main figures of Japanese artistic avant-garde.

From April 15 to September 7, 2025, the Quai Branly Museum in Paris therefore invites us to learn more about the personal and artistic journey of Taro Okamoto by comparing several of his works, produced between 1930 and 1970, with the museum’s collections.

The exhibition will notably unveil the imposing ” Sun Tower »; a monumental sculpture imagined and built by the artist for the Osaka World Expo in 1970.
