We learned it a few hours ago, John Sykes died at age 65 after a long battle with cancer. Rock loses one of its flagship guitarists.

He began his career in 1980 with the heavy metal band Tygers Of Pan Tangbefore joining Thin Lizzy until their split in 1984 and had even been featured on their critically acclaimed album Thunder and Lightning. John Sykes then joined Whitesnake and co-wrote some of the band’s most famous songs, including Is This Love.

His team published a post in tribute to the artist on his Instagram account
