At the Télémac theater in Nîmes, the La Nouvelle Cigale company presents “Gibier de gallows” by the king of vaudeville Georges Feydeau.
Plumard, Pépita’s deceived husband, decides to call the police to investigate the facts. Taupinier, the lover, arrives but Pépita sends him back to buy the newspaper and look for a brooch lost the day before. As is often the case with Feydeau’s plays, it is a question of adultery, with an absurd logic… But for Olivier Urbe, actor in the La Nouvelle Cigale company which is presenting the play this weekend Gallows Game at the Télémac theater, it goes further. And that’s what makes you happy to play or see plays by the author, king of vaudeville.
“Given the current gloom, a Feydeau is always good because it’s funny and entertaining. But it also tells other things, notably how the Parisian bourgeoisie lived in the 19th century, but also other social classes , the valets, the housekeepers It looks like what Maupassant did may seem trivial, but it is a witness to his time. explains Olivier Urbe, on stage with Sylvain Fiorentino, Thérèse Mestre, Benoît Mézy, Sylvie Tanguy, Marie-Christine Touya. This play presents in addition to suspense, a detective intrigue, “but these are of course just misunderstandings”continues the actor within the amateur troupe.
World champions of amateur theater
La Nouvelle Cigale has existed since 1996. Over the years, the Gard company has produced classics, Greek authors… It has obtained the supreme award in amateur theater, the Golden Mask for an adaptation of Aristophanes. This opened the doors to the amateur theater world championship in 1998 in the United States, where the troupe was crowned!
-“We have always been keen to be supervised by professionals, because we want to progress, not to settle down in a certain comfort”insists Olivier Urbe. For each creation, the company calls on directors. This time, the actors teamed up with Christian Chessa, from the company Conduite interior. “You need very great precision in the staging, it has to go quickly, it has to be lively but it has to be precise. Christian Chessa has worked a lot on directing actors. We are all going in the same direction and we go there together Its staging is linked to the social and economic context of the time.explains Olivier Urbe. A lot of work at the table took place beforehand to maintain the clarity of the text, sparkling and full of twists and turns and misunderstandings.
“In addition, Christian Chessa is a composer and he wrote original music especially for this show”welcomes Olivier Urbe. To embrace the police atmosphere, “he created a slightly jazzy atmosphere, like that of 1950s thrillers.”
