Road deaths increased slightly in the Tarn-et-Garonne in 2024. According to the latest data published by the Departmental Road Safety Observatory (ODSR), 25 deaths were recorded on the department’s roads, compared to 24 in 2023.
After stability observed since 2022, this figure illustrates a worsening of the situation, in a context where the number of injury accidents has also jumped, going from 147 in 2023 to 174 last year.
Persistent risky behaviors
The risk factors remain unchanged. Speed, alcohol and drugs continue to play a major role in road accidents. In 2023, these three elements were responsible for 32%, 21% and 17% of fatal accidents. In 2024, according to ODSR 82, they led to 795 temporary license cancellations, compared to 742 in 2023. In two years, nearly 1,500 licenses were withdrawn, a significant proportion of them for excessive speeding. , testifying to a tightening of sanctions and controls by the prefecture.
Young people and soft mobility particularly affected
Although serious accidents involving light vehicles remain the most numerous, “soft mobility” – pedestrians and cyclists – suffer an increasing proportion of the damage. These fragile users constituted 15% of victims in 2023, a trend accentuated in 2024 with an increase in hospitalizations concerning them.
Young drivers aged 18 to 24 remain particularly exposed. In 2024, this age group will account for a third of recorded deaths, prolonging a recurring problem. Already, in 2023, 33% of deaths on the roads of Tarn-et-Garonne concerned this category, despite targeted awareness campaigns.
Departmental and national roads, where excessive speed is a crucial factor, concentrate the majority of tragedies. In 2023, 83% of deaths occurred outside urban areas, a trend which, according to 2024 figures, remains unchanged.
Prevent through the “Permit for all” action
The authorities of Tarn-et-Garonne highlight the first positive results of the “Permit for All” operation, a preventive initiative launched by the public prosecutor of Montauban, Bruno Sauvage, and supported by the prefect Vincent Roberti.
This program, aimed at raising awareness among young people about road safety while financing their driving license, is gaining in scope with its successive editions, bringing together more than 200 participants.
In 2024, only two young people under the age of 25 were among the victims at the time of the event, giving hope for a lasting impact of this system on road safety in the department.
