British actor Jude Law will play Vladimir Putin in Le mage du Kremlinthe next film from French filmmaker Olivier Assayas.
It was Jude Law himself who confirmed the news in an interview with the specialized site Deadline Hollywood.
“I haven’t started working on that yet. Or rather, I’ve started but right now I feel like I have to climb Mount Everest and I’m still at the foot of the mountain wondering what the hell I was thinking “, confided the 52-year-old actor known for his roles in The holidays et Fantastic Beasts.
“But that’s often how I feel saying yes [à un rôle]. I often wonder if I will succeed in meeting the challenge. But it’s up to me to find the answer.”
Adapted from the book of the same title written by Giuliano da Empoli and published in 2022, Le mage du Kremlin transport us to Russia, in the early 1990s, after the collapse of the USSR. The film will follow the journey of a young artist and television producer who unexpectedly becomes the image advisor to Vladimir Putin, a former KGB agent who will eventually become the president of the government of Russia.
According to the magazine VarietyPaul Dano will play the main role of the film, a character inspired by Vladislav Surkov, a former Putin strategist. Alicia Vikander and Tom Surridge will also be in the cast.
Olivier Assayas (Irma Vep, Carlos) co-wrote the film’s screenplay with writer Emmanuel Carrère. Filming dates have not yet been revealed.
