5 mins. reading

In the basement of the Théâtre de la Colline, once you have passed a series of corridors and staircases deserted on this winter afternoon, the activity of the rehearsals of the company Les Bruits de la Rue delights. On the right, stage manager and technicians are busy. On the left, a young woman with bleached hair and a woolen hat watches the actors’ dance steps from the corner of her eye. This is the choreographer Stella Keys Ladys. At his feet, a feline mask waits for its turn. And at the back of the stage, behind a boat, two musicians play in front of a screen…

The master of ceremonies, Dieudonné Niangouna, is everywhere. For a moment alongside the prompter, he finds himself in a few strides on the set to inject more energy into an actor who is dancing, then turns around to correct an actress – “No, not like that, it’s too theatrical!” – before suddenly transforming into an actor for the duration of a response. Dieudonné Niangouna is the author, director and actor ofOperation Rumbapresented at the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne from January 15 to 17.
