While Mufasa : The lion king, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 et Moana 2 continue to dominate the global box office, it’s time to take a look at the productions due to hit theaters over the next twelve months, and which should please young and old movie fans alike.
As we might expect, sequels and remakes are once again legion in American production. As for Quebec cinema, the year 2025 will be marked by the release of a brand new Tale for everyone titled My mother-in-law is a witch (brilliantly chosen title that viewers aged 7 to 77 can easily relate to), which is due to be released this fall.
A little earlier, just in time for spring break, Quebecer Marc-André Lavoie will invite us to his D’ado crisiswhose storyline relates the incredible attempts of a group of young people set out to find a lost cat. To be seen in theaters, from February 21.
A month later, on March 21, it will be the turn of the controversial live-action adaptation of Snow White to try his luck in the cinemas. A troubled production, already marked by changes in direction, not entirely convincing digital effects, attempts to modernize a classic tale, and actress Rachel Zegler’s many missed opportunities to save herself a little embarrassment. Can the doubts be dispelled? We only ask to be surprised…
Speaking of question marks, on April 4 we will be treated to A Minecraft movieadaptation of the ever-popular video game, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa. The director of Napoleon Dynamite seems to have put his personal kitsch touch into what appears to be a happy mess likely to go in all directions. Will the whole thing nevertheless be able to reach its destination? We are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Then, on May 23, Disney will persist and sign with another live-action adaptation, this time of Lilo & Stitchthe original animated film finally being recognized for its true value.
Following the success of the series Cobra Kaiwe will be entitled on May 30 to a brand new chapter in the saga Karate Kid (Karate Kid: Legends), in which the characters of Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan will cross paths to help a young karateka make his mark in the discipline.
A double bill awaits you from June 13, when Pixar will offer us the often postponed animated science fiction film Eliowhile Paramount Pictures will release its live action adaptation (yes, another one) of Dragons (French version of How to Train Your Dragon).
A musical comedy based on the world of Smurfs will hit theaters on July 17, while the not-so-bad villains from the animated film The bad guys 2 will resume service on August 1.
Then, on August 8, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan will switch bodies again in the unexpected sequel to Freaky Friday, Freakier Friday (it makes sense).
We will then have to wait until November, when we will be entitled to a Thanksgiving similar to that of last year with the release in quick succession of Wicked: For Good (November 21), and another sequel to a very popular animated film from Disney Studios, this time Zootopia 2 (November 26th).
In short, older spectators will be on familiar ground again this year, but with the opportunity to introduce a new generation to the stories and characters that once thrilled them.
All without counting the many gems whose release will be announced in the weeks and months to come!
