It’s one of Disney’s greatest classics. “Beauty and the Beast” was rebroadcast last night on M6, and we are going to check with the ten questions in this quiz if you are a real fan of this cartoon!
A few weeks ago, on the occasion of the release of Mufasa: The Lion King, we offered you a quiz on the cult Walt Disney cartoon from 1994. And last night, it was another summit for the company to big ears from the early 90s which was rebroadcast on M6, Beauty and the Beast.
The opportunity was too good to offer you a new quiz on another great classic from the Disney team, and here are ten questions, not all obvious, about this cartoon adaptation of this world-famous tale. Before you attempt the challenge, here are some filming secrets.
DID YOU KNOW?
Inspiration
Contrary to what one might believe, screenwriter Linda Woolverton was less inspired by Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast than by George Cukor’s Four Daughters of Doctor March, affirming that there were also a lot of Katharine Hepburn in Belle.
Tribute
Beauty and the Beast is dedicated to producer and lyricist Howard Ashman, who died before the film was completed. At the end of the credits, we can read: “To our friend Howard Ashman, who gave a mermaid her voice, and a beast his soul. We will be eternally grateful to you.“
Dubbing
The voice of Robby Benson, interpreter of the Beast, was mixed with previously recorded growls of wild animals. This is also the reason why the character changes his voice at the end of the film, after having regained his princely appearance.
He who conquers himself wins
In the introductory sequence of the film, we can read on the stained glass windows of the castle the Latin words “Vincit qui se vincit” (literally “Will conquer who can conquer himself”). This motto echoes the challenge posed to the Beast, who must himself triumph over his selfish nature to seduce Belle.
