- Cannes sets cinematographic trends.
- The films “Bird” and “The Room Next Door” are released next week.
- February will see the release of several biopics and the “Bridget Jones” sequel.
- The blockbusters will really begin in April with “Mission: Impossible”.
Most blockbusters are usually scheduled a year or more in advance. However, these are rarely the most interesting films on the cinematic spectrum. In this area, and we’re not going to lie, it’s like every year Cannes which sets the major trends of the moment. Does this mean that those who are selected will make the law? No, but outside, uncertainties loom on all sides. This start of the year will be marked by the joint releases of the fabulous «Bird» of Andrea Arnold, sometimes cited as a favorite for the Palme d’Or last May, and of the latest Almodóvar, “The room next door”Golden Lion in Venice but minor opus. Both from next week.
Later in the month, more or less free biopics will collide with «Better Man» (22), portrait of Robbie Williams as a young monkey, and «A Complete Unknown» (the 29th), with Timothée Chalamet disguised as Dylan revised and corrected by James Mangold. On February 5, we will discover «The Brutalist» by Brady Corbet, one of the Venetian shocks of last season, which tells the story over thirty years of the fate of a Jewish architect who escaped from a camp. But also the new part of Tuche, «God Save the Tuche»and Paddington Bear, “Paddington in Peru”. Without forgetting the biopic of Maria Callas, signed Pablo Larrain and soberly titled «Maria». The continuation of Bridget Jones’s diary, «Bridget Jones: much the lazy»it will be for the 12th. But not sure that we should rejoice.
Beyond this date, the issues and expectations are more vague. Firstly because the list of announced titles doesn’t mean much to us. And then because certain Cannes candidates, like «Parthenope» by Paul Sorrentino or «The Shrouds» by David Cronenberg, will not arrive until spring, almost a year after their premiere on the Croisette. As for the much awaited “Mickey 17” by Bong Joon-ho, with Robert Pattinson, it is finally scheduled for March 5, which suggests a prior Berlin selection.
Tom Cruise’s last mission
It is in April that the first blockbusters of the year will dare to make their way to theaters. This is the case of «Mission: Impossible – the Final Reckoning»sequel to “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning”, which dates back to July 2023. It is the eighth and probable final opus of a saga launched in 1996. Its release on April 30 means in any case that the film will not be not in Cannes (in May) and that the producers do not intend to repeat the “Top Gun” event, which set the Riviera ablaze in 2022.
For the rest of the year, many event films will make their way through an increasingly busy schedule (there has been a clear inflation in the number of films released in theaters since the end of Covid). To cite everything is impossible. But we can’t ignore the new «Superman» (July 9), signed James Gunn, whose trailers are already visible. Neither «Avatar 3» by Mister Cameron, who returns to invade us on December 19. The new Paul Thomas Anderson, «The Battle of Baktan Cross»starring a mustachioed Leo DiCaprio, will be unveiled on August 6. On the French side, a new Cédric Jimenez, «Chien 51» is scheduled for October 15 while the return of ex-winner Julia Ducournau, «Alpha»does not yet have a date.

And then we should have new films from Wes Anderson, Alex Garland, Kelly Reichardt (but we’re still waiting for the previous one), Joachim Trier, Kristen Stewart (her first directorial film), Yorgos Lanthimos, the Safdie brothers but separately, or even by Andrei Zvyagintsev. Multiple reasons to salivate.
