North Korea resolutely opposes the United States and regularly berates South Korean leaders, accusing them of being “puppet” of the Americans. Conversely, it is moving closer to Russia, with which it signed a mutual defense pact in June that came into force at the beginning of the month.
During their meeting, members of the ruling party also called for strengthening relations with “friendly” countries.
Pyongyang and Moscow have strengthened their ties since the latter launched a war against Ukraine in February 2022.
The United States and major allies denounced North Korea’s “direct” support for Russia, saying it represented a “dangerous widening” of the conflict.
Pyongyang is accused of supplying troops and military equipment to Moscow, with Westerners fearing that Russia will offer it assistance, particularly economic and technological, in exchange.
