Cocorico? For the first time in ten years, two French productions dominate the ranking of the most seen films in France in 2024. French cinema even ranks three titles in the Top 5 – in 2014, a boom year, there were four, out of four first places (What have we done to the good Lord?, The Aries Family, Supercondriaque et Lucy). Another reason for satisfaction: our three champions are based on original screenplays (if we are willing to consider that yet another adaptation by Alexandre Dumas is an original subject…) while the seven American blockbusters which complete the Top 10 of 2024 are sequels or variations of more or less successful franchises – a worrying sign of creativity at half mast within Hollywood studios.
10 – “Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom”, by Wes Ball
Many distributors would love to achieve 2,530,409 admissions for just one of their films. But this score is the worst obtained by an episode of the saga inspired by Pierre Boulle’s novel since its relaunch in 2001.

9 – “Gladiator 2”, de Ridley Scott
Two million eight hundred thousand admissions (2,818,988 exactly), this is, apparently, a good result for a peplum as bloated as the sequel to Gladiator. But the bigwigs at Paramount undoubtedly hoped for more: the first part, already directed by Ridley Scott in 2000, had attracted nearly 2 million additional spectators.

8 – “Deadpool & Wolverine”, de Shawn Levy
Marvel was blindsided by associating the brat from its superhero stable with its clawed mutant. With 3,716,208 admissions, the film (rather cynical) by Shawn Levy almost equaled the very good score of the first Deadpool eight years ago.

7 – “Dune: second part”, by Denis Villeneuve
Since the release of the first part, its two young stars, Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, have increased their popularity. Which explains, in part, the rise in the rankings of the Frank Herbert saga revisited by Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, which, with 4,099,647 admissions, attracted nearly a million more people than three years ago. years.

6 – “Despicable Me 4”, by Patrick Delage and Chris Renaud
It’s rare that the fourth part of a franchise manages to attract more people than the first. However, it is the performance achieved by the latest opus of the adventures of the infamous Gru and his army of Minions which, despite the weariness felt by early fans, attracted (if not seduced) 4,472,127 people (often young people) in the rooms.

5 – “Phew Love”, by Gilles Lellouche
A massive promotional campaign both on traditional media and on social networks brought to the firmament the romantic film “Bigger than Life” by Gilles Lellouche. 15-24 year olds, who, according to the Vertigo Research institute, represented 29% of the film’s viewers, praised, on TikTok, this love story carried by two stars of the new generation, Adèle Exarchopoulos and François Civil.

4 – “Moana 2”, by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, Dana Ledoux Miller
Even Disney did not expect such a hit for the continuation (although not famous…) of the adventures of its Hawaiian princess. With 5,976,317 spectators in just four weeks of release, the film has already exceeded 5,552,587 admissions. Vaiana, the legend of the end of the world, seven years ago. And it’s not over…

3 – “Vice-versa 2”, de Kelsey Mann
A Pixar production, and it’s a guaranteed jackpot for Disney. Confirmation with the sequel to the studio’s masterpiece which, with 8,415,274 spectators, achieved almost twice as many admissions as the first part, in 2015.

2 – “The Count of Monte Cristo”, by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte
Alexandre Dumas and Pierre Niney superstars! After the good scores in both parts of the Three Musketeers last year and at the start of 2024, the adaptation of the other absolute bestseller from the king of serial novels attracted large crowds from 7 to 77 years old, despite its duration which reduces the number of screenings: 9,345,566 spectators in total, making it the 14th most seen French film in theaters of all time. And allows it to join the Top 50 films with the most admissions in France since the beginnings of cinema (in 42nd place).
