In June 2009, three years after the previous part, Ice Age made his comeback to the cinema. Titled Ice Age 3 – Age of the Dinosaursthis sequel became, upon its release, the second most lucrative animated film in history in the world behind Shrek 2with nearly $887 million collected at the box office.

Pop culture in the spotlight in Ice Age

This success was not a coincidence, since the Blue Sky studios had adopted the same recipe which had worked miracles for Shrekthe franchise phenomenon from Dreamworks: multiplying the parodies and nods to numerous works of popular culture. Thus, a large part of the scenes in the saga Ice Age are full of details that are more or less easy to spot, making direct references to cult films. In this third part, we find elements of ET the Extraterrestrial, Jurassic Park 3, Mission Impossible 2, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings or even Terminator 2among others. But an entire plot is inspired by a story that has marked literature, as well as cinema and television…

Ice Age 3: a dinosaur version of Moby Dick

It's about the relationship between Buck – the one-eyed weasel who arrives in the universe of Ice Age – and Rudy, the gigantic baryonyx, larger than a tyrannosaurus, who terrorizes animals and who put out his eye. Buck's obsession with Rudy continues throughout the film, as does Captain Ahab's obsession with the sperm whale Moby Dick. Besides, Moby Dick is an albino beast, just like Rudy. Like Captain Ahab in Moby DickBuck has been injured to the point of being disabled by a creature for which he absolutely wants revenge. When Buck tells his story, the clouds form waves and Rudy emerges like a whale. We also notice that Buck's weapon is a tooth from his dinosaur enemy, which is identical to a whale tooth. Some lines are even taken from Moby Dick, except for a few words. Note that a film dedicated to the character of Buck, Ice Age: The Adventures of Buck Wildwas released on Disney+ in 2022. This spin-off aimed to keep fans waiting before the highly anticipated return of Ice Age in the cinema: the sixth part is due to be released on December 18, 2026, ten years after Ice Age 5: The Laws of the Universe.
