Burkina Faso mourns the death of Adjaratou Sanon, known affectionately as “Adji”, a star of Burkinabè Music. Adji died on the night of Tuesday, December 24, 2024, from breast cancer and mediastinal cancer.
Adji Sanon became known for his unique style which mixed traditional Burkinabè sounds, such as Wiré, Waraba and Gourmatchéma, with modern influences such as coupé-décalé. His talent was revealed to the general public after the death of his companion, Black So Man, on March 16, 2002 in Abidjan.
To honor the memory of this famous artist, Adji released a tribute album combining covers of Black So Man songs and his own creations. This opus met with dazzling success and marked the start of a remarkable career.
A life marked by resilience
Adji Sanon, over the course of his seven albums, knew how to sing hope, love and faith. His latest album, “Under the Wing of Faith”, released on January 12, 2024, is a true ode to the artist’s gratitude to God. Through his melodies and lyrics, Adji expressed his gratitude for life, despite the trials.

This inner strength was all the more impressive as Adji had to face very difficult personal trials. She was first observed with breast cancer, followed by the discovery of mediastinal cancer. Despite the suffering and heavy treatment, she remained a source of inspiration thanks to her joy of life.
One last goodbye
The death of Adji Sanon is a loss for Burkinabè music and for all those who were touched by his voice and his message. She not only contributed to promoting Burkinabè culture, but she also embodied courage and perseverance.
His journey reminds us that, even in adversity, it is possible to leave a luminous mark in the world.
