Red alert on Red One. The Christmas movie brought by Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson smashes everything, or almost. Released in theaters a month ago, with relative success, Red One is at the top of the bill on Prime. As proof, Amazon MGM studios announced that the blockbuster recorded the best film start on Prime Video, with 50 million views in its first four days on the platform (Thursday to Sunday). 20 Minutes took a look at a work that breaks with the traditional codes of Christmas fiction.
Super Prime Gift
First of all, Red One is not necessarily the film on which we stop at the entrance to the cinema. The offer is currently dense and seeing The Rock in this type of feature film, combined with the unflattering reviews that the film received, leads to it being passed on. Error ? Red One is one of his many films which embrace a completely different destiny on platforms. We can no longer count the fictions which have had a makeover after a failed start or a passage under the radar in the cinema.
Its availability on Prime Video less than a month after its theatrical release (the film is still offered in certain theaters in France) suggests that Amazon studios were banking more on long-term success on their platform, rather than ‘a shorter run in theaters. Because yes, Red One, thanks to its 50 million streamings in four days, should remain at the top of the offerings on Prime throughout the Christmas holidays. The film has all the makings of a moment of delight with the family, after digesting the turkey and the log.
Who blames Santa?
You hesitate – like me, the other evening – to launch the two hours of Red One. Go for it, and above all forget the plots too often seen and revisited in Christmas films. That of Red One features the kidnapping of Santa Claus (JK Simmons) who must be rescued by Callum Drift, head of security at the North Pole (Dwayne Johnson, who also lends his voice in Vaiana 2), and the world’s most famous and evil bounty hunter, Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans). It’s heavy, it takes you on a journey, it’s spectacular, sometimes not very credible, and, casually, it takes another look at this kind of fiction. There is no doubt that Red One and its good dose of action should attract quite a few little elves in the years to come.
