Since the lawsuit against Amber Heard in 2022, Johnny Depp has been ousted from numerous projects in Hollywood. The actor revealed in The Claws of the Night in 1984 saw his character in Fantastic Beasts 3 be entrusted to Mads Mikkelsen, given the saga Pirates of the Caribbean consider a sequel without its legendary Jack Sparrow. His close collaborator Tim Burton did not invite him to Beetlejuice Beetlejuicehe did not make an appearance in Wednesday on Netflix. While the actor’s setbacks seemed to have put an end to their long collaboration, Burton took advantage of the Marrakech International Film Festival to discuss their common future in the dark rooms. Asked about a future meeting, the director of Sleepy Hollow et Edward Scissorhands does not rule out a new joint film.

Without dwelling too much on the subject, he explains that an opportunity could present itself. “I’m sure there will be one. I never tell myself that I’m going to use this or that actor. I usually have to base this on the project I’m working on. That’s cinema. It’s about collaboration and sharing ideas with people around you”. After all, there is no shortage of ideas. The director has given in to the call for sequels, with the long-awaited second part of the adventures of Beetlejuicewhy not with a universe that has already proven itself in cinema? Who among the barber of Fleet Street, the touching Edward or Ichabod Crane could be favored by the filmmaker who seems to have regained his enthusiasm?

A sequel

None, according to his speech. If Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was a great success at the cinema, as much as the return of its filmmaker who seemed to have lost the flame, Burton has no plans to continue this momentum…or at least with Edward Scissorhands.

“There are certain films that I don’t want to do a sequel to, because I felt like they were one-offs. I didn’t want one for The Nightmare Before Christmas, because it’s a unique story. It is better for me not to make sequels to certain films, and for me, this is one of them (Edward Scissorhands editor’s note)”.

Concerning Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryWarner Bros has already turned the page and is now focusing on the version played by Timothée Chalamet. Director Paul King is already working on a sequel, closer to the film directed by Gene Wilder than to Burton’s saucy proposal.

What does the future hold for Burton?

Reassured by the success of Beetlejuice BeetlejuiceBurton is preparing his return to the forefront of the cinematic scene. If the continuation of the adventures of Wednesday Addams on Netflix was among his priorities, the end of filming finally gives him the opportunity to focus on new projects. A monster worshiper, he will tackle the remake of a 50s film for Warner Bros. In a press release relayed by Deadlinewe learned that it is Attack of the 50 Foot Woman which would be favored over the coming years. The story evolves around a unhappy wife at home which following an encounter of the third type transforms into a giantess. Gillian Flynn, to whom we owe Gone Girlwill be writing. For now, the distribution remains a mystery, as does the release date.
