During a ceremony organized Monday evening at the Palais des Congrès, the Marrakech International Film Festival honored Canadian director and producer David Cronenberg. The Golden Star, the festival’s prestigious distinction, was presented to him by German actress Diane Kruger.
A tribute full of gratitude
In his speech, David Cronenberg expressed his gratitude to King Mohammed VI and HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, President of the Festival Foundation. He said he was honored to receive this distinction which celebrates a film career spanning more than five decades.
“It is a tremendous honor to be included in this remarkable list of filmmakers who have received this Award before me,” he said. Cronenberg praised Moroccan hospitality and highlighted the importance of cinema as a tool for exploring connections between individuals and making sense of a complex world.
A look at a unique career
Diane Kruger, during her speech, praised the lasting impact of David Cronenberg’s work on cinema. She has described her style as a unique combination of grotesque and profound, challenging notions of reality and identity.
“His films transcend the simple framework of horror or psychological thriller, integrating an emotional depth that leaves a lasting impression on the viewer,” she said. She also emphasized that her influence extends beyond her own works, inspiring a new generation of filmmakers to push the boundaries of storytelling and genre.
Projection and retrospective
The ceremony was followed by the screening of the film “The Shrouds”the filmmaker’s latest opus. This moment made it possible to revisit themes dear to Cronenberg, such as physical and social mutations, explored in landmark works such as « The Fly » (1986) et « Dead Ringers » (1988). His films, often associated with “Body Horror”, question the boundaries between the body, the mind and technology, as evidenced by « Videodrome » (1983) et « eXistenZ » (1999).
