It was the phenomenon of the month of November 2024 on Netflix. The animated series Arcane produced by Fortiche on behalf of Riot Games and Netflix made its comeback on the SVOD service after 3 years of endless waiting. And the adventures of Jin and VI ended in apotheosis. It must be said that the budget was substantial to realize the vision of its creators because if Arcane cost 250 million US dollars, it would be the fault of the perfectionism of the studios behind League of Legends and the universe of Runeterra.
The embodiment of perfection
Arcane is the subject of an unprecedented craze among the general public for animation on Netflix, a craze that only Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has been able to arouse to a lesser extent. This animated series achieved the feat of obtaining a perfect 100% rating on RottenTomatoes for both the first and second seasons.thus allowing this animated saga to represent a certain idea of sacrosanct perfection. Critics and spectators are rave about it and we understand them in the JV editorial team as we were captivated by a gripping story from start to finish and visuals of a quality rarely achieved. It must be said that it cost 250 million US dollars to produce!

$250 million perfectionism
250 million US dollars, such is Arcane’s titanic budget. This makes it the most expensive animated series in the world, but far from the sums swallowed up by animated feature films if we take the time to reduce said budget to the number of minutes created. During an interview given by the musical producer of the series, Alex Seaver explained how Arcane could have cost so much to produce. Riot Games’ perfectionism would be responsible, but it is not necessarily a bad thing. He explains in particular how Fortiche and Riot Games worked hand in hand to achieve excellence.
The series was made by Riot Games, which I think is one of the reasons it took so long to make. There are all these articles about how much it costs, and it’s because we’re not a movie and TV studio, we’re a video game company. But I think that’s also why, in a sense, she broke the “curse” of video game adaptations, or as people call it, because those are the people who care the most about game. They created it.
We do not outsource our work to traditional film and television professionals, who can perform just fine. But for something like that, the particularity is that it was done within the company, and we do all the animation in Paris with Fortiche. But they are already part of us. We’ve been working with them for five or six years on some of our biggest music videos
(Christian Linke) loves animation as an art form. The team consists of Fortiche and Riot Games. We meet every week. We are in constant communication. We do a lot of trips to Paris, and that’s the whole process. We write it ourselves and we create the music with amazing artists. That’s probably why it feels so much like a team effort, because it all happens within the company.
And that’s why the easter eggs and references to champions are so deep and rich, because they are the ones who invented Vi and Jinx, who brought them to life, who write Arcane. They wrote these characters about ten years ago, and now they’re here. I think that’s one of the reasons she’s so unique and authentic. – Alex Seaver (music producer on Arcane)
