In an interview with The Honest Bunch, Nigerian comedian and actor Okey Bakassi recently made statements that sparked widespread interest on social media. He expressed support for polygamy and asserted that women should also have the right to marry multiple men, if they so desire.
According to him, polygamy is better adapted to African culture than monogamy, which he considers ineffective. He also insisted that women should have the same rights as men when it comes to marriage.

He declared: “I am convinced that polygamy is the best form of marriage for Africa. Monogamy doesn’t work. We pretend it works, but it doesn’t. Polygamy allows having multiple spouses simultaneously, while monogamy prohibits this. And if you do not want to divorce one of your wives, but society forces you to do so, then you can have several partners during your life, but on condition of divorce. So society doesn’t say you can’t have multiple wives, it just tells you you can’t keep them all at the same time. »
He also spoke of the complications linked to successive divorces: “What happens when you’ve divorced multiple women and there are children involved? You’ve had many wives, but in the end, you’re with the last one, and the others are still a part of your life because of the kids. If they are more successful than you, you can be a little freer. Free in the sense that you are responsible for several women and children. »

Regarding the issue of polygamy for women, Bakassi responded: “When I talk about polygamy, women ask: ‘Can women also have multiple men?’ For me, yes. If a woman can provide for more than one man, she should have the right to do so. If a woman is rich, influential and thinks that one man cannot give her everything she wants, she should be able to marry several. And I’m sure there are men willing to accept that. »
To conclude, Bakassi added: “If a woman is successful and wants to have multiple men, she should be able to do so. The company is not opposed to it. Otherwise, she will divorce one man, marry another, and so on. She will always end up having several men in her life. When we’re ready to discuss all of this, then let’s do it. »
