a goofy and endearing teacher

The British call it the « Messy Millennial Woman »the French nickname her “the endearing” (note that this also works in the masculine). Doria Tillier today gives her version of this contemporary heroine who we have already often encountered on the small screen, whether in the guise of Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), d’Aisling Bea (This Way Up) or, longer ago, from Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal). In her incarnation as a young woman slightly out of sync with the world, Iris borrows from elsewhere Fleabag and to Phoebe Waller-Bridge her gravity, which gives the series, in its best moments, an interesting depth.

“I wish someone would shut me up”confides this thirties with brutal honesty, teacher and aspiring author of children's books, in a cushy couple with a pianist who is kind but tired of the mix “pragmatism and slight dementia” of Iris, which puts her in conflict with everyone, all the time. His meeting with a prominent editor (Jeanne Balibar), who offers to publish his manuscript, acts as a revealer of his ability to adapt and grow. Unless Iris lets herself be a little too upset by the feelings that her husband inspires in her, in which she recognizes her particular relationship with the world and people.

In a very condensed format – six episodes of barely 25 minutes – Doria Tillier and her co-writer, Constance Verluca, succeed in bringing to life a character slightly against the current feminine stereotypes: less loud-mouthed, less sexual, less borderline than the others, Iris nevertheless cultivates an intimate disorder conducive to fantasy, on the borders of which excellent supporting roles flourish – François Morel, irresistible old beau, Pascale Arbillot or even Anaïde Rozam, the revelation of the series Worship.
