Le Figaro’s opinion

9/10

In 2021 and in complete discretion, La Bastide de Saint-Tropez, a five-star Relais & Châteaux hotel, is purchased by HÔTELS PAR Collection, a family group owned by Gérard Pariente and his three sons (Gregory, David and Gary). 35 years after its creation by Boris-Serge and Janine Sidoroff, the beautiful house had fallen asleep. At the time, the couple, passionate lovers of Provence and the Mediterranean, dreamed of a hotel that was not a hotel, a sort of inn with family hospitality, Tuscan sweets and luxurious comfort. In 2024, the bet is won and La Bastide is well and truly awake.
The owners entrusted the renovation to Parisian interior designer and gallery owner Jessica Berguig, who was inspired by the southern light and favored mineral and natural elements. A great idea! For Gary Pariente, “The creation of a hotel is above all a human adventure which calls upon different but complementary profiles, from the banker to the painter, including the architect.” Noted. Today, La Bastide de Saint Tropez is well on its way to becoming one of the most highly rated establishments on the peninsula.
The hotel with 26 rooms and suites – all with balconies or terraces – is built around four Provencal farmhouses, a main house and a (new) swimming pool made of Bali stone, enhanced by a work by the artist Valentine Rosi Mistou. In the lush garden, cypresses, palm trees, fig trees and lemon trees offer guests total privacy. You can also take all your meals there if you wish, the restaurant has been designed as a high-end trattoria, you can treat yourself to a treatment at the Holidermie spa and, above all, you can enjoy the precious silence. True luxury.

The situation

9/10

Nestled on Route des Carles, this Relais & Châteaux is a few minutes by car from Place des Lices, where the famous Saint-Tropez market takes place every Tuesday and Saturday. It is also about ten minutes from the pretty Graniers beach. The hotel management offers to organize transfers from the Saint-Raphaël SNCF station or from the airports of La Môle, Toulon and Nice.

The decor

9/10

Loyal to the Hôtel de La Bastide since her youngest age, Jessica Berguig has ensured to preserve the soul of this family place, where regulars find refuge under the pines, far from the hustle and bustle of Saint-Tropez. The curator has chosen Italian artisanal ceramics, terracotta shades, terracotta and natural fibers. Combining Italian ceramics (Ginori 1735), vintage pieces and furniture from her JAG gallery in Paris, Jessica Berguig has created a welcoming decor, reminiscent of a Saint-Tropez villa. The ground floor has kept its stone floor and its majestic staircase, testifying to the history of this emblematic residence. We love the ceramic works of Olivia Cognet, the main one, masterful, of which hangs at the entrance of the hotel.

The rooms

9/10

A radical change of decor in the 26 rooms and suites! From 21 to 50 m² and some with private terraces, they present themselves as timeless refuges with refined decoration. The omnipresent natural materials set the tone: a respect for the Provençal art of living, revisited from a contemporary angle. Jessica Berguig succeeds in subtly distilling a creative vocabulary mixing current pieces and timeless elements. In the suites, the terracotta tile floor recalls the Tropezian spirit, while the natural fiber rugs, the white sofa, the wavy coffee table and the tripod bedside table create an atmosphere that is both modern and authentic. The wrought iron wall lights and the pretty ceramic lamps complete this harmonious picture. Amenities Diptych, free minibar, bathrobes, safe, hair dryer… Almost everything is there for a five-star hotel, we would have liked more efficient blackout curtains.

Service and facilities

9/10

To best run this luxurious Saint-Tropez holiday home, a young director, Stéphane Correia, ensures that each guest is welcomed with the greatest care and makes the most of their stay. The Relais & Châteaux also benefits from a head concierge, a shuttle service to the centre of the village – ask to test the all-electric Porsche Taycan 4S! Bike enthusiasts (also electric) can use the hotel’s bikes to go to the beach, although the heated swimming pool is a must. Finally, the spa now welcomes Holidermie, the holistic In & Out beauty brand founded by Mélanie Huynh. The new menu combines relaxing massages and regenerating anti-aging treatments. We absolutely let ourselves be tempted by a Kobido Signature treatment (€180 /60 min), a complete and intense ritual working on all the tensions crystallized in the face. Holistic beauty.

At the table and at the bar

8/10

Perfect egg, potato millefeuille, cauliflower puree and Oscietra “Kaviari” caviar (€32), pasta with eggplant, tomatoes and ricotta (€32) or veal Milanese, tomato tataki, arugula and gribiche sauce (€40)… Served in the winter garden or on the terrace, chef Francesco Alario’s cuisine is in the colors of Provence and Italy. Short, simple and fresh menu and the Isoletta restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. For a chill lunch by the pool, under the fig tree, the restaurant’s BBQ is open every lunchtime from June to October. We take advantage of the last rays of the sun to treat ourselves to an “Anthracite” at the bar, a house cocktail composed of whiskey infused with black tea, Chaga syrup and cocoa cream (€22). Everything we dream of doing in summer.

Value for money

10/10

Luxury hospitality and the French art of living just a few kilometres from the centre of Saint-Tropez or the beaches of Ramatuelle come at a price: from €450 in low season and €870 in high season. But with breakfast included in a Relais & Châteaux away from the summer crowds… Who can beat that?
