As we know, “cashless” systems are becoming more widespread at Belgian festivals. At Ardentes 2024, in 15 days, the introduction of a specific currency called “Flammes” will replace the euro. A Flame is worth 1.25 euros. But the news is not very well received by everyone.

The conversion actually complicates the calculations for many festival-goers, who express their dissatisfaction on Instagram in particular. Critics point to the confusion and increased costs caused by this system. Some people think that the organizers’ objective is to make them spend more on drinks without them realizing it. In fact, every time they think they are spending 1 euro by paying 1 Flame, it will actually cost them 25 cents more.

Others point out that the festival is already expensive enough as it is: the day ticket is €110 this year and the 4-day pass is €292 (€337 with camping). This is an amount that is increasing. It is increasing because there is indeed Mr. Ladreit de Lacharrière (a French billionaire, editor’s note) from Fimalac who bought back shares in this festival. But since 2023, there is also Live Nation. And when Live Nation enters the capital of large companies like that, indeed, it often results in an increase in prices.“, noted municipal councilor (Vert Ardent) Elena Chane-Alune on Monday in the debates on municipal subsidies for the festival.

Another problem is the Flames’ reloading and refunding system. The minimum reload is two Flames (2.50 euros), and reloads must be done in increments of four Flames (8, 12, 16 euros, etc.). In the event of excessive reloading, festival-goers can get their remaining balance back, but a refund fee of three Flames (3.75 euros) is applied, justified by the organizers as necessary to verify each refund. This system is seen by many as a complication and a source of financial inconvenience, diverting from the initial objective of simplifying and improving the festival experience.
