Queen Elizabeth II, who reigned for 70 years, kept a diary throughout her reign. She made her last entry there two days before her death, and we now know what she had written there.
During her 70 years on the throne, the Queen regularly wrote down the activities she engaged in.
“I keep a diary, but not like Queen Victoria’s. He is quite small,” revealed the monarch, who died on September 8, 2022, during a documentary on the royal family.
For comparison, after Queen Victoria’s death in 1901, her 141 diaries were digitized and published online. Elizabeth II’s diary entries are briefer and focus more on her daily activities than on her thoughts or feelings.
“His last entry was as factual and practical as ever”
We now know what the Queen’s last entry in her diary was. In the book “Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story,” British nobility expert Robert Hardman reveals that Elizabeth II kept her diary with her until her last day at Balmoral Castle, Scotland.
The last diary entry is dated September 6, 2022. Two days later, Elizabeth II died at the age of 96.
“His final entry was as matter-of-fact and practical as ever,” Hardman writes, explaining that it could have been a description of a completely normal workday.
“Edward came to see me”
“Edward came to see me,” the queen wrote. By Edward, the monarch is not referring to her youngest son, Prince Edward, but to her private secretary, Sir Edward Young.
On September 6, 2022, the Queen and her private secretary notably discussed the swearing-in of new British ministers. After the resignation of Boris Johnson from his post as Prime Minister on July 7, 2022, Liz Truss was appointed to succeed him.
A photo of Liz Truss during her audience with Queen Elizabeth on September 6, 2022 remains the last public image of the monarch.
