In the four-part series, former Spice Girls star Victoria Beckham, the footballer’s wife of 23 years, revealed the depression her husband suffered after the 1998 World Cup round of 16 defeat to Argentina. As a reminder, David Beckham was sent off the field during the second half, and he was booed by a large part of the public. Victoria Beckham says she suffered public hatred while she was pregnant with their first child. And her husband even more so. She also confided what had never been revealed: following this difficult episode, David Beckham fell into severe depression, the footballer having tolerated loneliness very badly during this ordeal. “The public harassed him, it was extreme… He was depressed, but in clinical depression,” she slips.
In this series, the Beckhams also opened their hearts about the beginnings of their love story. In an extract revealed by The Sun, and which we see in the trailer, Victoria Beckham revealed that their first dates took place in unglamorous places, like parking lots. Her husband reacted by ironically saying that it was “classy”. An image that contrasts sharply with the public image of the Beckham couple, considered one of the most glamorous couples in the world.
