“La prisonnière”, an unpublished title part of the work of Michel Berger and France Gall, had been sleeping for almost fifty years in the drawers of their record company. It is available on platforms and in a new best-of, “Plus Haut”, containing fifty-seven songs.
“Happiness is there, which comes and which goes. You have to walk towards it and walk straight. You have to do what you have to do, what you have to do. But if someone points at you, if you don’t make the right choice, there’s no longer any point in coming back to my place, I wouldn’t recognize you”, sings France Gall in “La prisonnière”, a title composed by Michel Berger in 1974. At the time, the two artists have just met. They already form an inseparable duo: he writes the Music and the lyrics, she interprets them with talent.
Written fifty years ago, “La prisonnière” has not yet gathered dust according to Karine Vouillamoz, anchor of RTS Option Musique. “The song could have been written today, the arrangements and writing are so perfect.”

A musical comedy project
Six years after her death from cancer, France Gall is still speaking out, this time on the challenges of human relationships and the fragility of happiness. The song was apparently unearthed by the record company by chance, while looking for multi-track tapes.
On the box, its title was written in English: “The Prisoner”. It was initially intended for a musical comedy project that Michel Berger and France Gall had imagined together, “Angelina Dumas”. Inspired by a Hollywood news item, it will never see the light of day.
“La prisonnière” has been available on all streaming platforms since November 8, as part of a new best-of by France Gall celebrating fifty years of career. Named “Plus Haut”, the disc has fifty-seven tracks to discover and rediscover, from “Si Maman Si” to “Résiste” via “Ella, elle l’a”.
